What Are Soft Skills?

Soft skills are the most essential ingredient of successful interpersonal relationships at home and at work. Read on to know what soft skills are and how they can be developed.

What Are Soft Skills

According to Collins dictionary ‘soft skills are interpersonal skills such as the ability to communicate well with other people and to work in a team.’ According to another definition ‘soft skills are people skills backed by our emotional intelligence which help us behave in a socially acceptable manner and adapt ourselves to a social environment so that others are comfortable in our company and vice versa’

Components of Soft Skills

Adaptability: It is an individual’s ability to manage change. It is about how quickly and efficiently a person is able to blend in and get productive in an altered environment.

Emotional strength: This involves managing mood and having control over it. An emotionally strong person succeeds in directing his mood and emotions such as anger, frustration and excitement.

Leadership quality: How one manages conflict in personal and professional situations and convinces people reflects upon his leadership quality.

Team playing ability: It is the ability to manage different types of people and make them work harmoniously with each other.

Decision making: This reflects upon how one manages his time and other resources in efficient and productive manner.

Interpersonal communication: This is an individual’s ability of effective communication with other and in the process creating a positive image of him.

Negotiation skills: This is how one negotiates with others and reduces the level of stress in work professional and personal environment.

Importance of Soft Skills:

According to American statesman John Hancock “The greatest ability in business is to get along with others and influence their actions”

According to the results of research conducted by Stanford Research Institute among Fortune 500 CEOs long term success in job is 75% due to soft skills and only 25% due to technical know how.

Soft skills also determine how satisfied and happy one remains in professional and personal situations.

Soft Skills Development:

Soft skills are not inherent or permanent. Rather they can be developed and enhanced over a period of time. According to Chronicle Year Book (2010) the following areas have to be worked upon in order to develop soft skills.

Interaction: This takes into account several factors like attitude awareness, leadership, team work quality, cooperation, conflict management and tolerance.

Communication: This encompasses skills such as listening, presentation, motivation and task delegation.

Self Management: This includes self assessment, self presentation, decision making, stress management, initiative.

Organization: This refers to problem solving, adaptability and strategic thinking.
